Dean's Rag Book "Brumas" rare Tru-to-Life bear, English, 1950s, black mohair, with label, brown and black plastic eyes, with black rubber surround, inserted black rubber nose and lower jaw, slight hunch to back, long arms and legs with rubber paw and foot pads with claws (mohair has come away from paw pads), small tail, body is designed to be un-jointed and floppy, some wear to mohair (especially around muzzle and to edges of seams), mohair has become detached around eyes, stuffing has shifted to neck and tops of limbs, rubber has significantly perished on pads and claws, 26"/66cm; together with his friend "Teddy Edward", golden mohair, 22"/56cm; (2). Provenance: "Dean's of England black bear 1950s. I had when seven years old. Mum won £150 on the Football Pools. I was bought this black bear from a big toy shop with the proceeds. I'm now seventy-three. He needs restoration. He was made when a black bear was born at London Zoo. I have to down size so must let him go. I called him Brumas (after the Polar bear from London Zoo). Also with his friend "Teddy Edward", bought when I was three. His eyes are taken from my dad's army uniform.

Provenance: The vendor states: "My 95 year old Mother has had the brown Teddy Bears since childhood. At a young age of only 4, she was taken to toy manufacturer Chad Valley in Harborne, Birmingham and chose one. The other bear with the growl initially belonged to her Brother, but he didn’t take care of him, so he joined my Mother’s collection. She would put them in a row, along with a cat and a sailor boy from the Queen Mary liner, in her bed at night and tuck the bedclothes up nearly under their necks, very careful not to ‘suffocate them’! She can still visualise the line up – always in exactly the same order! She loved them all; they were her own little family. When my parents moved to Germany in the 1950s, the bears were left at her parents’ house. They subsequently survived a few house moves but sadly became a bit worse for wear over the years. It was only when my parents downsized recently after 66 years in the same house that we re-discovered the bears in the eaves. The other stuffed toys were bought in the late 1950s and early 1960s for my Sister and me. The white bear was bought for me when I was born in 1960 and was much loved. It would mean a lot to know that they can all find a new loving home and maybe be restored some way to their former glory!

Steiff "Cubby" antique Muzzle Bear, German, 1911-1917, Art No 5350,27, with small underscored "f" button, light brown mohair, black boot button eyes, remains of black nose stitching, with felt underneath, fully jointed, felt pads, black claw stitching, leather muzzle, tilt growler does make a sound (very intermittent), mohair faded overall, wear to mohair under chin, where collar has rubbed, tiny patch of wear to left arm (near elbow), some slight moth damage to pads, leather muzzle and leash is fragile in places, but still intact, this bear is in astonishing original condition, 25"/64cm. NB: The vendor states "Cubby was originally owned by a wealthy family in New Jersey, USA. When the children grew out of their toys, they were given to their nanny. She kept Cubby, as he was known, for all of her days. Her granddaughter then sold him in auction in 2014. The private owner then sold to a dealer, from whom I purchased Cubby in 2016".
